Gnarly men in mud-spattered 19th-century work clothes and women in plaid dresses and bonnets wander around, looking perfectly at home in their costumes. Penny Rose, the very British costume designer, brings a good-humoured, no-nonsense efficiency to the set. “The show is clearly all about the silhouette so I’m very hot on hats. The ladies all wear corsets, no one gets away without one.” Depp’s costume, she says, was particularly important. “We really didn’t want Tonto to be called Jack Sparrow on a horse,” says Rose, who also designed the costumes for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (earning Bafta nominations for two of them). “We wanted this to be iconic on its own. Johnny is the master of originality and has a big input.”
