These 132 figures he then turned into notes, assigning the lowest temperature (which happened to fall in 1909) to the cello’s lowest note. Each rise or fall is matched by a step or leap in pitch. The figures show an irregular but inexorable rise in temperature, so the piece ends many octaves higher than it began. Crawford videoed himself playing the piece on the cello, and it’s now “gone viral” as they say. You can view it here:
