When I meet Haze in London a few days before her live performance she’s finishing her debut album with the producer Markus Dravs, who’s worked with Coldplay, the Arctic Monkeys and Mumford & Sons. He called her out of the blue and, she says, “He was like, 'We should work together.’ And I was like, 'What? You say no to everyone!’” It’s an unlikely collaboration but Dravs tells me, “I was very struck by her lyrics.” He first heard her music in early 2012: “The more I found out about Angel, the more I sensed that she’s open in terms of musical genres, which I found exciting.” The resulting record, “Dirty Gold” (out early next year), is a unique mash-up of styles, with catchy choruses, big, dub-steppy beats, a sprinkling of comedy Game Boy sounds and, of course, a dose or two of scorchingly honest storytelling.
