The star is the old favourite 'Bishop of Llandaff’ with its bushy shape, black ferny foliage and strong stems topped by vivid red flowers. The Bishop, approaching 90 years old, was first bred by Fred Tresedar, a Cardiff nurseryman. It was selected by the then Bishop of Llandaff, Joshua Pritchard Hughes, before being released in 1924. Pritchard Hughes must have had a great eye for a plant. Most dahlias of that era have long gone – many break down because of viruses – but the Bishop soldiers on brilliantly.
